How to Make a Meditation Space in Your House

I believe that our home is our personal sacred place. It is where we go for refuge from the outside world. It is a place of love, security, rest, laughter, nurturing and contemplation.Living in modern times, everyone is looking for a way to find the ability to be at peace with themselves. For both seasoned meditation practitioners and novices, having a home meditation space is an important component of developing inner peace and mindfulness. Here, we will take you through the process of creating a quiet escape that suits your needs and desires.

Meditation Space - Joy Journey Of You

Step 1: Pick the Spot! Make Sure You Choose the Perfect One!

The first thing you need to do is to choose the best spot in your house that will serve as a place for meditation. This is best done in a nice quiet space with few distractions. Be it a corner in your bedroom, a comfortable niche within the living room, or even a section of your garden. Each room should have the elements of things that have meaning to you, your partner and/or children. Things that bring joy and love into the being of your home. The trick is to do it where you will feel confident and be able to get into the headspace; if that means privacy, then make sure anything else can wait for 28 minutes or less.

Step 2: Clear the Space, Clear Your Mind

Once you have that location chosen, go ahead and clear the space. Clean its surroundings and tidy up any clutter; never justify piles of unnecessary furniture you do not use or an object that serves no purpose on it to dignify the symbolic space. I also highly recommend if nothing else, to cleanse your space and yourself daily to cleanse unwanted energy. You can use the sage and cedar mist or burn sage. Having a clean and uncluttered space can help in having a clear mind. For those of you lacking space, pop your meditation bits and pieces on a small table or shelf.

Step 3: Make It Cozy and Romantic, Your Body Will Appreciate It

Every beautiful meditation space in the world. Put some pillows, a meditation mat, or an easy chair. Soft lighting like a candle or dim lamp will help to create the mood and generate calmness. You can also add little things to your space like plants, crystals, and even a mini-waterfall—anything that will bring nature into the comfort of your own home.

Colors are also so important. They help create moods. I painted my house inside in a canary yellow and whites and that really brought so much joy in. I didn’t know it at the time but it was my 3rd chakra expressing itself. You can also use your own personal favorite like I did and then you realize what it is you actually needed at that time.

Step 4: Make It Your Own and Enjoy It

Meditation spaces should reflect your style. Such things could be art, spiritual instruments, or anything else that means something to you. If you personalize your space, then it will be more inviting, and you are likely to want to spend time there regularly.

Consider incorporating healing crystals into your meditation space to enhance its energy and your practice. Crystals like amethyst, rose quartz, or clear quartz are not only beautiful but are also believed to promote calm, love, and clarity. Placing them in your space can help amplify your intentions, create a soothing atmosphere, and support your journey toward inner peace. See our product pages for ideas or you may find something that you would want to add to your home space.

Step 5: Limit the Noise and Distractions

We all need to have a quiet place in our home to be able to do meditation or just quiet contemplation. It could be a small room in your house or a place outside in your yard. I have wind chimes outside my bedroom window that bring beautiful sounds in. If you don’t have space, try and make a corner with a sitting chair with a table and little altar. For maximizing the beneficial blood flow, I recommend getting used to sitting isolated with no distractions, so keep bug noise, mouse clicks, and the like to a minimum. Silence your phone, shut out sound by closing windows, and tell other household members you are not to be disturbed. Try experimenting with noise-canceling headphones or soft background music to keep you more focused during meditation.

Step 6: Create a Schedule So You Can Be Constant.

Once your meditation space has been prepared, you must use it regularly. Choose a time of the day to practice meditation and make it non-negotiable. Consistency is key when it comes to meditation, whether first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Take time out to get quiet and reflect on what you want your space to feel like. Then go for it!
